Before Someone Else Says It
A short guide for the moments you wish you’d spoken up.
Have you ever left a conversation thinking… “I was going to say that.” Or remembered exactly what you wanted to say twenty minutes later?
You’re not alone. Most people assume this means they’re not confident enough.
It often isn’t confidence. It’s what happens when your brain is trying to think, edit and protect you all at the same time. While you’re searching for the perfect way to say it, the conversation keeps moving. Then the moment is gone.
The good news is that this isn’t something you’re born with. It’s a skill you can build.
You don’t need to relate to all of these.
If even one feels familiar, start there.
- □ You wait until you’re completely sure before speaking.
- □ You keep rewriting the sentence in your head.
- □ You assume someone else probably knows more.
- □ You tell yourself your point isn’t important enough.
- □ You think of exactly what you wanted to say after the conversation has finished.
Awareness is often the first step towards changing the pattern.
The next time you catch yourself hesitating, don’t ask, “Is this the perfect thing to say?” Instead ask, “Will this help move the conversation forward?”
If the answer is yes, say it. It doesn’t need to be perfectly worded. It just needs to arrive while the moment is still there.
The people who contribute the most aren’t always the people with the best ideas. Very often, they’re simply the people who stop editing themselves long enough to share them.
Your voice becomes stronger every time you use it. Not every time you rethink it.
Choose one meeting. One conversation. One opportunity. Aim to contribute just once. Not with the perfect sentence. Just with your own.
Afterwards, notice what happened. You’ll probably discover that the hardest part wasn’t knowing what to say. It was giving yourself permission to say it.
